These Merlot grapes come from another Ramona vineyard that is about 30 years old. The berries are smaller than is typical of Merlot which yields a rich flavor profile with a harmonious tannic structure and a very clean finish. The grapes were harvested and destemmed on September 9th, 2016 at a Brix of 25 and cold fermented for about nine days then stored unpressed into stainless steel tanks to bulk age for about 10 months. A gold-medal winner even before it was bottled.
Tasting Notes (Jan Crocker)
Rose petal, lavender, raspberry, blueberry, black licorice and pipe tobacco fragrances; blackberry, blueberry, black pepper, pipe tobacco, and mid-palate flavors; rich Merlot keeps its focus with gentle minerality and nuanced acidity; long finish with dusty black fruit, tobacco, and a touch of black pepper. Lovely, and brooding.
